Motorists reminded to keep pets safe and follow essential rule

Dog owners are being reminded to properly secure their pet pooches while on the road to keep them safe and avoid risking a hefty fine. Pets retailer Jollyes said research shows more than half of owners bring their furry friends with them on car journeys but 29% - nearly one in three - do not use a harness or secure cage. This is despite the risk they could face a £5,000 for travelling with an unrestrained pet. The retailer cited Post Office figures and said eight out of 10 Brits will opt for a staycation over a trip abroad in 2025, making now the perfect time to brush up on travel requirements for pets and stock up to suit. Jollyes said its range includes a £5 Rufus & Rosie seat belt to provide a safe and affordable alternative to travel crates, which can be trickier to fit into a luggage-packed boot, adding that dog seat belts can be particularly suited to smaller breeds such as cockapoos and cocker spaniels. The retailer’s range also spans a variety of travel pens and carriers in addition to a collapsible water bottle to keep canines hydrated and maximise space as well as a paw washer to keep them clean, whether at the beach or campsite or while travelling. Adam Dury, Jollyes chief operating officer, said: “As the pet people, everyone at Jollyes is passionate about ensuring all dog owners have the knowledge and equipment they need to keep their passenger pooches safe on the road. “Over a quarter of dog owners are not properly restraining their dogs while driving. “That’s why we want to do our bit to keep the UK’s roads and dogs safe this summer by providing shoppers with the know-how they need to keep themselves and their pets safe on staycation – without breaking the bank.”
