Remarkable volunteer, 88, celebrated at Dogs Trust

A devoted dog lover who turned his personal grief into a source of hope for dogs in need is among the volunteers being celebrated this week at Dogs Trust Manchester for Volunteers’ Week.

After losing his beloved dog Jack to a tumour last year, Jeff was inspired to find a new purpose.

When he donated Jack's things and belongings to the rehoming centre it sparked the idea to give back.

Now, he has become a much-loved member of Dogs Trust Manchester and spends an afternoon each week bringing joy and companionship to the dogs waiting to find their forever homes.

He looks forward to helping, whether taking them for a walk, playing with them in the exercise compound, or offering a treat and gentle company.

Jeff said: "I've had four rescue dogs throughout my life, and they've given me so much, this is my way of giving back.

“You get as much pleasure as the dogs do; it's a two-way thing."

Volunteering for just over a year, Jeff is also a familiar face at the centre's coffee mornings, often joined by his family, who lend a helping hand.

Although he’s no longer able to have a dog of his own, Jeff says volunteering fills that gap and gives him the companionship he cherishes.

Lisa Eardley, Dogs Trust Manchester rehoming centre manager, said: "Jeff is a real inspiration to the team, who proves that volunteering benefits not only the dogs but the people, too.

“His warmth, dedication and love for our four-legged friends is felt throughout the centre every time he visits, and they absolutely adore him.”

Jeff's journey is a heartwarming reminder that the power of volunteering has no age limit and that the bond between people and dogs is timeless.

Dogs Trust Manchester shared Jeff’s story as it celebrates the contributions of its 3,800 volunteers across 22 rehoming centres for Volunteers’ Week, which runs June 2-6.

The charity said volunteering vacancies are all available.
